Dust Jackets and Naked Books

I've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of my newest Barnes and Noble order because it included Fragile by Lisa Unger, a book I've been dying to read.

Well, it arrived today and it was NAKED! I knew it was used because I bought it from one of the B&N authorized sellers, but he made no mention that there would be no dust jacket, and I am peeved. It totally squelched my excitement. I would have bought a different copy had I known. Bad bookseller! I don't understand what could have happened to the cover either. I've gotten a few books in the past that are naked, and it doesn't make any sense to me. Where do people put the damn jackets?

Yes, I obviously can and will still read the book. In fact, I usually take dust jackets off while I'm reading, but then it goes right back on. Because a dust jacket is important! It's going to look weird on my shelf, plus, I like to read the inside flaps. I'm so disappointed... so upset. :( I wish I was kidding, but I'm not.

So uhhh, does anyone know where I can get a dust jacket for Fragile? Anyone? Anyone?

What do YOU think about dust jackets?

  1. I MUST have the dust jacket! I understand completely...I do have a FEW books without dust jackets out of the probably 400 books I own and when I say a few I mean maybe 5. That means I loved them enough to keep them. So yes, I totally get it!

  2. Ugh! I'm sorry for you! That would piss me off too! Try sending the seller an email- asking where it is (and why they didn't mention it's missing) Other than that, I don't know how to get one. Maybe you have a friend who has a copy with the DJ that doesn't keep them, and you could trade? ;)

  3. If I specifically want a book a book cover is a must, if I just happen to find something at a consignment store or something and it's super cheap it doesn't matter.

I can understand being pissed about it..I would too. Definitely a downer.

  4. My dust jackets have a special home on my shelves when I am reading the book. I would be peeved as well if I received an order without the dust jacket on it. If this was not listed in the descriptions I would SEND IT BACK! A missing dust jacket is a major issue and should always be listed in a book's description.

  5. I prefer my books naked ;) I actually keep the cover on when reading and file it nudey. I usually store my covers in case I ever come up with a cool craft idea for them. If I had this cover I would so send it to you.

  6. I heard from one blogger that they nabbed a cover from their local bookstore, because their book jacket flap came to them a wreck. :P

Dreadful, though. I need those flaps, too.

  7. In the olden days of my book retail job, you could contact the customer service department of the publisher and they would send you out another one, if you had a proof of purchase. We used to do that all the time instead of doing full refunds for "damaged" books, if the dust jacket was just a little beat up.
    They might still do that.

Fragile is on my list too! i have enjoyed Lisa Unger's other books...well, ONE other book Beautiful Lies.!!

    Good luck! Bad bookseller indeed.

  8. I'd ask for a refund if it was no disclosed. The covers are the best part sometimes. Fragile is a good book.

  9. You should return it if you're not happy with it! It will keep bugging you otherwise, I should know.

  10. I'm with the other commenters that say to send it back. That person misrepresented what they were selling, and I bet B&N would back you up on that.

  11. I would get pissed too!! I rarely take a cover off unless it's really bothering me.

  12. That's really bad, I would complain to the sellers if i were you!

When I have a book with a dust cover I always take it off before reading the book. Then way, it ensures that the cover isn't tatty.

  13. Yep, that would seriously annoy me too. I LOVE dust jackets. They make me so excited to open the book (or not sometimes). I hope you enjoy the book anyway or find a cover -- not sure where you could get one...

The question is: what is wrong w/ that seller? :)

  14. I always take the cover off to keep it safe or from getting messed up in any way. Once I'm done with the book, I put it back on and file it neatly with its cover. I really like the plastic covers the library uses and have considered ordering some just to keep my dust jackets even safer.

I agree, return it unless you don't want to deal with the hassle and get a different copy. It's too bad that this happened to you :(

  15. You know what, I always wondered what people do to the jackets when they disappear. I usually take the jackets off as I'm reading, too, because I get annoyed when they slide all around. But I could never throw away a jacket or even destroy one!

  16. Oh no! WTF? I would be so sad...I'm OCD about covers haha maybe try ebay?

  17. Don't ususally bother with dust jackets. Why? Because I get paperbacks. Yeah, the cover stays on PERMANENTLY

  18. That is the whole point of having a hardcover, I would be pissed also, I actually am a little for you. I would send it back also and ask for Fragile with the cover.

I would just download the book if that was the choice (rolling my eyes)

  19. I used to work in a little independent bookstore where the owner hated dust jackets and would sometimes remove them and throw away. I was appalled, and we had a heated discussion or two about this. I finally convinced her that she should leave it up to the customer as she might be losing sales. I love covers, as the book looks naked without one!

  20. Same thing happened to me! Only mine is an out of print book, and a gift for someone else! I don't have time to order another one now! So upset... the book is A Very Young Dancer by Jill Krementz. Any ideas what I can do?
