Help! Kindle or Nook?

It's almost my birthday and I'm getting an e-reader as a gift! I don't know which one to get though. I figured my awesome book bloggy friends would know what to do!

I like that with the Nook you can download books from other sources because it's Epub compatible... but the B&N website is SO slow whenever I'm on there searching for books. Does anyone else have that problem? I have a fast new computer, so it's not my computer that's acting up.

Because of that issue, I was considering the Kindle, but I was leaning more towards the Nook before that.

So, what are your recommendations? Do you have one? What are the pros and cons?

Thank you for your help!

  1. J has a Nook & really loves it. He's had it since January - it's one of the B&W ones. I got it for him at the Greece B&N and they were super helpful (love them over there!). Plus, I think you can try out books for free in-store if you bring your Nook in. I use both the Kindle & Nook aps on my iPad and both are pretty great, but I am envious of J's e-reader screen. It's so nice to read on!

  2. I have the Kindle and LOVE it, I have only seen the Nook in the store and I do love the colour but everything about the Kindle is amazing to me, so fast with downloads, acts like a cell phone with MG, easy to search on the online store, built in dicitionary is my favourite feature.

My vote is Kindle :-) oh and they respond to emails.

  4. I just got a nookcolor for Christmas so I haven't had long to play with it but I'm pretty happy with it. I can't compare it to the kindle which I didn't want because it comes from amazon and can't read epub. I agree that the B&N website has been super slow lately although I've also used it and it's been normal so maybe Christmas traffic?

Anyway I am planning to mostly read netgalley, project gutenberg, and library ebooks (which I will download through my computer) so that doesn't bother me so much. If you have any specific questions about the nookcolor, I'd be happy to answer them for you!

  5. I have a Kindle. I haven't used any other ereaders so I really can't compare. We can't even have the Nook over here in the UK. All I can say really is that I love my Kindle dearly :)

  7. I like the Kindle because I do 99% of my book buying at Amazon. They have wonderful customer support too. I also get books from NetGalley and they have the option to send it directly to the Kindle. Concerning features, I think they all do about the same thing. Any choice is a good one!

  8. After a great deal of research we went with the nook. The nook B and W has a longer battery life and voted number one e reader on the market. because it has been out the longest it has a better reputation with consumers. I also like that if I want help with it or a problem I can take it to the store. If i got the kindle I would have to ship it to amazon then wait for them to do whatever with it and then send it back.

  9. I have a kindle, and I love it. I've played around with the nook at B&N, and it seems nice, but I'm still glad my husband got me a kindle.

  11. I have a nook and love it! Debated long and hard before getting an eReader as I didn't want to give up my physical books, but find myself reading more than ever! Mainly use it for library books and NetGalley. Plus I love the in-store support and classes they hold.

Have fun with whichever device you decide on!

  12. I received the Nook for Christmas. It was horribly slow Christmas day and yesterday but this morning I was able to download a book lickety split! I liked the fact I can get books from my library on it. I think both the kindle and nook have their strong points. It is a tough decision to make. I'm sure you will enjoy whichever one you decide on!

  14. Got the Color Nook for Christmas and I am in love! It's awesome! Either way I'm sure you'll be happy! However, I know I can't download library books on the Kindle which was a huge decided factor for me!

  17. Whatever you choose I highly suggest not buying color. Color means the screen is backlit which means it's like a computer screen and will be hard on your eyes. I read a lot - A LOT - for school (PDFs) and for fun. I need the greyscale, non-backlit screen.

After serious consideration I chose the Kindle which I just got a couple weeks ago. I am really happy with my choice. I looked for a long time at the nook. I didn't like the long refresh rate for turning pages. And I did not like the mini touch screen at the bottom. I love everything about my Kindle, especially the free wi-fi/web browser, fast downloads, fast page turn, cheap book prices and the keyboard.

    Good luck with your decision!

  18. I adore my Nook, and I bought it because I don't really want to support Amazon. I have the 3G and wi-fi one, and it's amazing. The Nook screen looks amazingly realistic and doesn't hurt the eyes.

Plus, you can get certified pre-owned for a fraction of the price! It works with Netgalley, and the touch screen bottom is great :)

  20. Like Melissa said above, I was kind of with her on not wanting to support Amazon. Nothing against them, but I just have a soft spot in my heart for Barnes and Noble. My mom has a Nook and loves it..I was supposed to get one, but got an iPad instead. I'd go with the Nook though!

  21. I have a B/W Nook and an iPad, love them both. Are either one better than the Kindle? No, not really. What I like about the Nook and iPad is the fact that I can read just about anything on them. I have the Kindle app on my Mac and iPad, so it works out well, I can get the .99 books on Amazon, or inexpensive reads on my Nook (B&N changes their free reads frequently), and if it's a popular free read, it's available on both sites anyway. I just liked the way the Nook felt when I was holding it. I also looked at the Kobo, but when with the Nook for the feel of the ereader.

  22. Hey Steph..I don't have one but from what I hear from friends, it's Kindle any day.. I have friends who have a Nook but aren't very happy with it.

  23. I don't have either, but from what I read, you can't read any books purchased through amazon on a Nook. As a self-published author and illustrator of children's books I would love to have my books available for a Nook device but I can't get them on Barnes & Noble unless I get published through a major publisher (in which you need an agent, but that's a whole other discussion). Barnes and Noble selects the books they want to sell through major publishers only, whereas a self-published author can make their books available on amazon for a Kindle. Which in turn helps new authors get discovered and read. This is just what I have found to be true and hope that it helps.

  24. I got a Kindle for Christmas and I'm loving it, but as I have never held a Nook, I don't know how to compare it. I do wish it was in color, but the fact I can pick up hot spots and get on the Internet helps tremendously despite being black and white. I was having trouble seeing the screen when it wasn't bright in the room so I have a cover for it which has a light attached. That just came in the mail today and boy it makes a big difference. I don't know about comparisons, but I'm loving the Kindle.

  25. I got a Nook Color for Christmas and LOVE IT. LOVE IT. LOVE IT. Did I say I love it yet? :) The main thing that I've read about so far is the the Classic Nook and the Amazon Kindle are not backlit so people find that easier on the eyes to read, but they still will need a backlight if they're reading in a dimly lit room, on an airplane, etc. The Nook Color, while more of a computer screen and can be bright, has an adjustable brightness meter so you can dim it way down and I've used that frequently reading at night in my dark room while my husband is sleeping and it's been very easy on my eyes.

I love the Nook Color. LOVE IT. Good luck! :)

  26. um... my Mac computer corrected a word without my permission -- "backlight" in the above comment should actually be book light... sorry about that...
