📝 My Review
This was a good book that really tackled a modern day problem head on. War affects so many people and it was insightful to read about this issue, especially from the rare perspective of a woman at war. This story showed the effects of war on a lot of different levels – how it affects the soldier, the spouse, the children and friends back home… it hit on SO many perspectives and made it seem so real.
I enjoyed how the book focused on Jolene both as a soldier, AND as a family woman. It delved into her personal problems AND soldier problems. Michael and the children were devastated and deeply affected, and I thought this was important to portray. The marital problems were also very real and heartbreaking.
This book was insightful and excellently written but I found it to be slightly slow moving though, and this is my own fault. About halfway through the book, I had to put it aside for a freaking month in order to read all my books for school, so I felt a bit disconnected from the story. I know that Hannah is an amazing writer though, as I previously read and LOVED Comfort and Joy. I will definitely read more from her but only wish I had read this book straight through so that I would have enjoyed it even more. I’ve seen nothing but rave reviews, so I’d definitely recommend this one for fans of contemporary fiction… I only wish my review could be more raving!
