Back off, Library HATERS!!!

UGH! You all know how much I love library. And as some of you may have seen on my Facebook and or Twitter yesterday, I was in a very rotten mood due to a very rotten patron at my library! He came up to check out a book (keep in mind that he is a library user!) and says, "what's going on in the stacks?" Our stacks are all currently being shifted at the moment due to our renovations. We aren't adding anything on, but we are adjusting locations and whatnot in order to build larger meeting rooms. This will mean we can have more people attending our programs because sometimes they currently max out due to the smaller room size. We are relocating the books and quiet study area to do this. Our Library Friends are also moving from their very tiny used bookstore to a larger one which is great because they do A LOT for us. We are getting new carpets as well, as ours are getting torn, and bubbling up. All of these renovations are being done to better benefit our patrons.

So anyways, the guy asks what's going on and I tell him the stacks are currently being shifted in preparation for our renovations. He says, "renovations?! WHY?! This library is BRAND NEW!" My response? "well, we've actually been open for about 11 years now and the library needs some work." *SMILE* It's hard to be nice to rotten people sometimes, isn't it?! Gotta do it, though. He grabs his book, begins walking away, and mutters, "what a waste of taxpayer money!"

People, I am raging! I am fuming! Is this man FOR REAL RIGHT NOW? He is USING the library, yet he thinks it is a waste of money?

And let me tell you, there is NO better way to spend "taxpayer money" than on the library. WHY? Because the library benefits EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE COMMUNITY! The library welcomes everyone in this county (750,000 people) to use our resources, and we have many of them. So KIND SIR, would you rather have just purchased that $26.00 book you just borrowed from us, or would you like to borrow it from us for free, just like any of the other 750,000 people may do?

I guess maybe he'd like taxpayer money to go to worse things, such as the people who expect government handouts which benefits only a few people and not all.

Why do people hate on libraries?! FOR REAL. Many people wouldn't be able to read if it weren't for libraries because they can't afford to buy the books themselves. I love supporting authors, so if I could, I WOULD buy all my books brand new, but I can't. I buy the very occasional new book, only for books, series, and authors I absolutely love. The rest of the books I buy are used. But the majority of the books I read are from the library: supports the library AND my wallet. WIN-WIN! I thought authors would be against libraries, but they're not! Just yesterday on Twitter, a dear author friend  of mine and bestseller told me she is a staunch supporter of libraries! I guess authors just want their books read more than anything else, and don't care about the sales money! SO. Let's reiterate. Without libraries, lots of people wouldn't be able to read... and we all know how important reading is. I wouldn't be ME if I didn't read. And how did I start reading, which shaped my entire life, from my career choice to my blog? I started reading as a child when my mother brought me to the library on a weekly basis. SO THERE.

  1. I loath library haters. I love, love, love my library they are so awesome about bringing in the books I ask them to. That way the author gets the sale I don't have to buy the book and others get to enjoy it as well. It's a perfect situation.

  2. I love my local library and do my best to support it all the time.

That guy sounds like a total ridiculous tool bag.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with him. Don't pay attention to that jerk.

  3. I completely agree with you. There is no better way to spend taxpayer money than on the library - OK, well maybe police and fire would be good too, but other than that, yeah, I want my money to go to the library.

I would have been tempted to say to the guy, "Well, if it's such a waste of taxpayer money, then I'll take that book back from you and you can go to Barnes & Noble and buy it yourself since you see this building as unnecessary anyway."

I personally get excited when I see changes and improvements made at my library. It means that people still see it as relevant and there is still a need for it. A few years ago when ebooks started to get popular, there was this uproar about whether libraries will even be necessary anymore. I'm happy to say that even with the surge in e-readership, libraries are finding ways to stay relevant and necessary for their patrons.

  4. He uses Libraries so that seems totally unreasonable and strange to me. I will be honest, I do not use my library but definitely donate to it. Why is this - I do not like the smell of libraries, they are usually dusty in my opinion and my allergies go haywire. If I couldn't afford new books I would totally use the library all the time.

When you know your doing the best for the community you have to ignore the couple that you will interact with hon, not worth your stress.

  6. That totally doesn't make sense, as libraries are vital to the community! Especially when times are tough, they provide a place to meet and offer internet access for those without. My library even lends eReaders and eBooks, so is keeping up with the times! The guy was obviously a jerk. :(

  7. I loved this post as I too am a huge library supporter!!! I wouldn't be the reader I am today if my Mom hadn't taken me to the library so much when I was younger and let me check out as many books as I could possibly read. I love getting the chance to do the same thing for my kids. Especially because they are just starting to figure out what kind of books they enjoy, and the library gives them a chance to try just about any kind of book. Nicely said!!

  8. I actually grew up not having a library and now that I have one, I can't imagine not having one. That guy is just very ignorant, as unfortunately, some people can be sometimes. I'd be annoyed too. Oh well.

  9. You tell them! It is ridiculous for someone who is using the library to question some renovations being done. I'm always amazed at all you can get and do at the library. Not enough peple take advantage of all the good things available there.

  10. Wow, what an imbecile! I LOVE LOVE my library - any library actually! Like you, I would love to buy all my books new - in fact, I would love to have a library in my home, but I can't. (I haven't given up on the dream that someday I will...) For Christmas I was given a wonderful gift of membership to my local "Friends of" the public library. Now I can work in the bookstore and participate in the fabulous sales. I am able to read new books constantly because of my library, and my daughter proclaimed the day she got her own library card as "the best day of my life"! My earliest book memories are of the bookmobile coming to my neighborhood and trips to our three story library in downtown Austin. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I totally get where you're coming from. Maybe one day he'll realize his stupidity!

  12. Yeah, that guy is a DOUCHE!!! Ugh, I so wish I could have been there to tell him off... cause you know, I have super-power level anger that makes people change their minds, lol. Really I just enjoy calling out stupid people.

However, I am SO EXCITED the little tiny used bookstore is getting expanded! Checking in there is my favorite part of going to our library, lol. Even when I used to live in the city, I drove all the way out to this library cause it's so awesome.
