India Butler is an English schoolteacher, who, after a rough school year, decides to visit her twin sister in L.A., where she is a famous actress. While there, India quickly falls in love with a handsome actor and decides to reinvent herself. Her new career as a workshop leader and passionate new love life are seemingly perfect, until an embarrassing video of her gets posted on YouTube, forcing her to watch her new life disintegrate before her eyes.
📝 My Review
This book underwhelmed me and took me quite awhile to get through. I didn’t hate it, but I felt like the whole time I was reading it, I was waiting and waiting for something to happen but nothing ever really did. Small events and incidents occurred, but nothing major to really help speed up the pace.
Another issue I had was the jumpiness of the writing. The story jumped around a lot, very suddenly. I would be reading about something, then suddenly, in the next sentence, it was the following day. I wasn’t too fond of the title character, India, who I felt was very shallow and uninteresting, though I did like her twin, Annabelle, when she was around. Everything seemed to fall into India’s lap too, which irritated me a bit. She never had to really work for any of the things she got while she was in L.A., they all just seemed to appear out of nowhere – the handsome man, the book deal, the successful workshops, etc.. This seemed unrealistic to me. I do enjoy reading books about big cities like L.A. and NYC, so I did enjoy the setting here, but felt that it could have been brought to life more vividly.
All in all, not a bad book by any means, but it bored me a bit and had some flaws that kept me from really enjoying it. If you’re interested in the Hollywood show-biz life, this might be the book for you.
