Things I'd Like to Learn

You ever feel like you’re running on empty? Like your dance card is full and you can’t add one more thing to your schedule, calendar, or life?

Yep, that’d be me. There is currently not enough time in the day or days in the week and I feel like I probably shouldn’t or couldn’t add one more hobby to my life because I am already so full… and yet! There are still things I’d love to learn how to do. Maybe when the time is right, or when life slows down (ha!), or when my boys are older.

But anyway, here are the things that I might someday maybe like to learn how to do. As you’ll notice, many of them are on the craftier side because I am the least crafty person in the world, but would like to become moreso.

Quilting

This one always tops my list of things I’d love to learn and that’s because of my grandma. She’s an incredible quilter and makes miracles from scraps. Because of her, I love quilts myself and have as many as I can around my home. I made one WITH her when I was a kid, but I honestly would have no idea where to start on my own. She lives in Florida, so it’s not super practical for her to teach me right now. I’d love to learn some day though as I’d really like to carry on the legacy!

Knitting or Crocheting

I’ve been wanting to learn how to either knit or crochet for quite some time now. I even have yarn and hooks that I bought with my sister in law years ago! We found someone online who was going to meet up with us and teach us, but she backed out. So there my yarn sits. My grandma can also do both of these things so maybe she can teach me on our next visit. I like the idea of knitting because it seems like something you can do while you’re watching TV or just zoning out. I am 100% a multi-tasker. I have a hard time sitting to relax and just watching TV, so I feel like if I was doing something productive like this WHILE watching TV, I’d feel better and be able to just chill out.

Sewing and making dolls

Another one of those crafty things I’m talking about. I think sewing would probably be the backbone skill to the aforementioned things I’d like to learn. I also think it’d be good to know how to sew for simple things like hemming clothes or fixing shirts, but mostly because I would REALLY love to make dolls. I am a huge primitive doll collector, and if I could make my own, that might save me some money. Haha!

Small home repairs

I’m not super handy around the house. Jerry is learning though and I would like to learn too. I don’t need to become some kind of contractor or expert, but if I could repair holes in the wall or paint a room (which I’ve done WITH HELP) without assistance, I think that’d be great.

Investing in stocks

This is something that I’m pretty uncomfortable and unfamiliar with but that I think would be beneficial to learn. Jerry and I have our retirement plans / state pensions (we’re both considered government workers), but I think it’d be good to also invest on our own. Maybe? I don’t really know. If you already have retirement plans, is this still necessary? See, someone help! I have no idea what I’m doing. We have state pensions and a 403(b). Do we need more?

Hair and makeup

I think that God chose to bless me with 2 boys because I am not girly. At all. My daily routine involves blow drying my hair and applying eyeliner and eyeshadow. That’s all I do. Maybe one day I can become more girly and learn how to style or curl my hair and learn how to wear more makeup than I do, but for now… that’s all I got.

Raising goats or other farm animals

If you’ve been around for awhile, you already know about my farmhouse dreams. Jerry and I live in the massive suburban town where I grew up, but I’d like to hightail it out of here to somewhere a little more rural. Ideally, I’d like a bit of land along with my much coveted farmhouse, and to be able to raise a farm animal. Or two. Or hell, maybe even three.

There are other things that I probably SHOULD learn to do, such as basic graphic design or coding for my blog, small car repairs, or maybe even cooking (I suck at it)… but just because I SHOULD learn these things doesn’t mean I want to. And since this list is all about things that I WANT to learn, those are not included. Some things, I’d just rather pay a professional for, know what I mean?
