Happy Friday! How was your week? Here’s what’s been going on in my world this week — let’s get into Five on Friday.
ONE.
Today wraps up my second week back at work full time. It’s been… interesting. It was slow at first, but we’re getting more and more people in each day. I’m feeling really torn about it. On one hand, it feels nice to have some sense of normalcy back. On the other hand, it really doesn’t feel safe, even though every single person entering the building is required to wear a mask. We are the only library that I know of who is open to the public; most are doing curbside pick up only. All that aside, I miss lazy days at home. It was hard to adjust to at first, but I started to get used to it and enjoy it.
TWO.
Since I am now back at work and dealing with the public, I was eligible for a COVID test which I got done yesterday. It was a drive through set up at the college my husband works at. Very well organized and safe. There were army folks and medical people there. They held up signs to ask questions and you would nod in your car. All was well and fine until I got the actual test done. It was pure torture. They jam a long stick as far back in your nose as it can go, to the point where it feels like it’s touching your brain. Then they wiggle it around for 15 seconds. My eyes were watering so bad, and when I was driving on the expressway home, I started to black out. I got super sweaty, hot, nauseous, and was seeing stars. I immediately exited, nowhere near home, and ended up near our airport. I sat in a restaurant parking lot for a few minutes until I felt back to normal. My dad told me this was a vasovagal response, which is essentially passing out from your blood pressure and heart rate dropping rapidly. For some reason, I reacted horribly to the pain of the test. I had this reaction one other time (when I was 17 getting my first gynecological exam, and the doctor did an ANAL exam!). I had the exact same reaction and I ended up vomiting after the appointment in the waiting room. Anyway, I really, really hope I don’t need to ever take a COVID test again. I did it to be proactive and safe because of the nature of my job, but I am pretty much regretting it now!
THREE.
My aunt spent almost the whole weekend at our house over the long Memorial Day weekend helping us (but mostly Jerry) create a garden in our front yard. I helped dig up some weeds and Caleb picked up sticks with his mini wheelbarrow. My aunt and Jerry did the rest and it’s looking really nice! One side is all veggies and edibles, and one side is all plants. We also picked up some free ferns that a woman was digging up and posted on Facebook. When it all starts to grow in, I’ll have to share some photos!
FOUR.
Aside from going back to work, we’re still being very careful. My mom does have to babysit again now (Jerry’s been working a rotating schedule), so we’re allowing the kids to see my parents, my aunt, and that’s about it. They came over on Mother’s Day. Jerry made alfredo and caramel cookie bars for us for dinner! Then we went to their house for Memorial Day and had garbage plates. My nephew turned 5 this week, and they held a little parade where we all drove by, including the police! I miss everyone, but I really need to keep my kids safe, especially now that I’m bringing home germs from work.
FIVE.
Even though I’m a librarian, I never used Hoopla or Libby much because I still prefer print books to ebooks. However, while we were home for 2 months, I used both of them quite a bit. We’re actually running virtual book clubs at work using books on Hoopla, which has been great, and since I haven’t been able to place new holds yet on physical materials, I’ve been doing a lot of Libby holds. Now that we’re back open, I’ll likely go back to mostly print reading, but I do see myself using these library apps a bit more than in the past!
That’s it for me! What are your weekend plans? Since I’ve been out at work all week, I’m not really planning to do too much this weekend, aside from a Wegmans run for my prescriptions. Hopefully lots of reading and enjoying the AC since it finally got hot here this week (I hate the heat, kill me now).
