Sara Collins is a twelve year old girl with a huge secret: she sees ghosts. Having a hidden psychic ability already makes it hard for Sara to fit in, but now she’s just moved from California to the New Jersey Shore with her dad, and has to start all over again trying to make friends. She wants to be normal and wishes the ghosts would leave her alone once and for all, but they just won’t. She finally meets some new friends, like her neighbor Lilly, but feels that her secret is holding her back. She’s never known what the ghosts wanted… until now. One of the ghosts is insistent that she help him with something… something that will save lives. Can Sara help him, or will her fear prevent her from doing so?
📝 My Review
I picked up Saranormal: Ghost Town because it had been a long while since I’d read any middle grade, and because it was Halloween time and I was in the mood for something paranormal. I was expecting something cute and light, and that’s exactly what I got. I think this is a great middle school read because it’s got the “trying to fit in” aspect that middle graders really relate to, as well as the paranormal aside to add a little something extra and interesting to grab the reader’s attention. Now, being an adult, this book didn’t scare me, but it had a little creep factor, and I think that for middle graders looking for some spookiness, this would definitely fit the bill without being overwhelmingly scary. While the book was nothing spectacular, I really liked Sara and the other cast of characters, like the kooky Lady Azura, who claims to be psychic, and the new friends Sara meets along the way. I thought this was a cute read and though it wasn’t a favorite, I’ll be reading the rest of the series to see what else Sara gets into. Definitely recommended for the middle grade reader who likes a little spookiness in their stories.
