Happy Thankful Thursday! I wasn’t even planning on doing one this week, but I’ve found many things to be grateful for in the last few days that I wanted to share. I am linking up with Rebecca Jo, as always! Here’s what’s been on my grateful list lately:
Wonderful police officers
If you follow me on Instagram, you probably read my post about what happened last Friday. If you haven’t, here it is: I wake up to Jerry bursting into our room at 5:30 am (he works early) to announce he thinks there’s a dead body in our yard. As he was leaving for work, he looked over to see a barefoot person lying in the grass. He called out to him and got no response and no movement. He ran back inside and we called the cops. They showed up and the man finally moved… not dead. That’s good at least. Now we just have a shoeless stranger passed out in our yard instead of a dead person. An hour long ordeal ensued wherein the man continued walking close to the house claiming he lived here. “My parents own this house!” Mind you… this house was built by my great-grandparents and has been in the family ever since. We bought it five years ago from family. No way this man has ever lived here. After the cops verified that we did not know him, he saw me in the window and changed his story. He said I was his sister and that I was a doctor. Then he told them he’d come in. They warned him it would be trespassing and he’d be arrested if he stepped back on our property. Guess what? He starts walking up our driveway anyway. He’s in between our cars and close to the garage door (closed, luckily). When he refused to stop, the police grabbed him, brought him to the grass, and had to take him down by force. Eventually he was taken away by ambulance for a mental health arrest at the hospital. After that, he will be arrested for trespassing and several other charges.
So why am I grateful? I was really shaken up by this, but I’m starting to feel okay and safe-ish again. I’m also thankful he wasn’t dead. The whole time that we thought he was, I was just chilled to the bone about it as we looked out at this lifeless body in our yard. Most of all though, I’m grateful for the wonderful cops we dealt with. Once the man was taken away, we had to speak to the cops for about an hour giving our statements and signing papers. They were down-to-earth, answered our questions, were honest and forthcoming, and even casual and chatty, especially the second guy we dealt with.
Holding my new nephew
I got to visit my bestie and her new baby again last week, and I finally got to hold him! He was premature, so we all had to wait awhile before we could do that. My belly is in the way so I can’t hold babies for long right now, but it was so nice. He looks great and healthy!
Getting sent home from triage
My blood pressure has been trending slightly high lately at my prenatal appointments. That said, I decided to take my BP on a machine at the store over the weekend and it was sky high! I called the on-call doctor and was sent to triage at the hospital’s labor and delivery unit. I was there for about 2.5 hours and my BP was perfect the entire time. The baby’s heart rate was also monitored and was perfect. Ultimately, they think the machine was un-calibrated. I was sent home happy and healthy. My panic over having the baby early was unfounded, and I’m grateful I have more time to prepare.
Friends who are family
On that note, I am so thankful for the aforementioned bestie and her family. We grew up together and are family more than friends. We even vacationed with each other as kids. When we got sent to triage, I was panicked because my parents, who are Cal’s babysitters 99% of the time, were out of town, and so was one of my aunts who lives close by. My sister-in-law was working, so another strike. We wanted to bring him somewhere close so we could get to the hospital. Her parents live close to us so I called her mom and she sent us to her house immediately. She wasn’t home, but her husband was, and he watched him for about 45 minutes while my parents rushed home. So grateful to have friends we can call on like this, not only right now, but ALWAYS. They have always been there for me and I am so lucky they’re in my life.
Feet healing
My ongoing saga with itchy feet. Sigh. I FINALLY — after years — bit the bullet and went to my primary care doctor about my feet. They’ve been itchy and dry for years and I was certain I had athlete’s foot. I tried treating it myself, but no luck. Well, I went and was not surprised to discover that I was correct in my diagnosis. She gave me some new foot spray to try and so far, it’s working wonders. My feet haven’t itched much at all in days. Fingers crossed this gets rid of it completely.
My blog friend Darby
Darby and I have been doing some reading together and communicate just about daily via email to go over everything. She is such a great mom and so wise. I really appreciate her friendship and guidance… and I will leave it at that because I don’t want to embarrass her. 🙂
Fun book club meeting
I run a Forever YA book club at work, as many of you know. Last night was probably/maybe my last meeting before my maternity leave so we had ice cream sundaes and a great discussion of Little and Lion. I am also thankful that my lifelong friend Malori, who is a book club member, is going to take over and run it for me while I’m out!
Thanks for reading — may your Thursday hold more good than expected.
